Domingo Siete has brought life and joy to our ears. With their explosive energy, they move us and keep on moving. This dublab “Sprout Session” should be a perfect example of that.

As Camera carved their cosmic trail through the US they stopped by LA to pay a visit to dublab. With abundant energy they took to the airwaves and built slowly built their set into a searing roar of driving sound. This Berlin-based trio are taking cues from Krautrock pioneers while blazing trails of their own design. If you like to dream about setting circuit boards on fire then smashing the ashes with drum sticks, this session is for you. If your inner synthesizer sketches trails of clouds across the sky, this session is for you. If you are ready to join the ranks of the Krautrock Guerilla movement, this session is for you. “Legend” is a word that is often too lightly doled out, but today we proudly present an interview with a bonafide LEGEND. Art Laboe is a broadcasting icon who was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2012. This honor was rightly bestowed as he was the first DJ to play Rock and Roll on the west coast airwaves, smashed color lines by presenting mixed race concerts and playlists, coined the term “Oldies but Goodies,” invented the concept of the compilation album and continues to bring joy to generations of radio listeners.

At 87 years young, Art is a sprightly figure, holding one of the top rated slots in Southern California radio, one of the world’s most important markets. He graces the airwaves six nights a week with his Art Laboe Connection program. The show’s format is an exception amongst commercial radio, emphasizing a direct connection with the community. Throughout each show he takes dedications from listeners and sends their songs and kisses over the airwaves to loved ones, many of whom are incarcerated. His radio show is a pipeline through which the emotions and wishes of listeners are transmitted. The songs heard on the Art Laboe Connection are a refreshing and heartfelt break from the glossy buzz flooding much of the dial. While Art plays tried and trued favorites every show his playlist varies widely night to night based on to listener requests and his mood. On any given episode you’re likely to hear rare doo-wop, R&B or sweet soul cuts played nowhere else.

We were honored that Art Laboe opened up his studio and schedule to graciously allow us this interview. Scholar and dublab board member Josh Kun sat down with Art at his Original Sound Studio on Sunset Boulevard to revisit the history of his illustrious career and explore the dynamic of his nightly connection with listeners cruising the California streets or listening close for the voice of a loved one.

Our favorite energy elixir in human form, Dan Deacon, returned to the dublab studio to stir up some sonic togetherness for the wide world of born ready listeners. In this special session he shared a suite of new tunes, including sounds from his original score for Francis Ford Coppola’s film “Twixt” and a few wondrously wild remixes. Dan then waved his magnetized wand to bring together the collective smart phone buzz fuzz found on vinepeek.com. He processed the random data flow through a series of finesse laptop moves that formed a beautiful sonic amalgam of these tiny viney video moments. Somewhere during the session we chomped a few cookies and burritos and washed it all down with some Marley’s Mellow Mood. Enjoy this archive from a man who urges you to be all you can be and more than you’ve ever been before.

Holy Balm rented a car in Australia and showed up at the dublab studio, performed an incredible set and disappeared as fast as they came, leaving as proof of their presence this audio recording and a picture of them on the dublab roof. They also left a cloud of sparkling dust behind them as they sped down the alley and onwards to their next sonic experience. Check out more of their music here. LIVE FRANKIPHONE PERFORMANCE: DOWNLOAD

Some people have the gift of voice and a way with words, and that’s their music. They’re able to communicate ideas so coherently and poetically that the information fully integrates into you. This is rare and amazing! Sciences, Metaphysics, the Cosmos and other profound subjects of note – they all appear with clarity and flow by the tone and shape of this person’s utterance. Kelan Phil Cohran is one of these people, and as well, his music is played through a range of instruments, from Trumpet, and a variety of reeds, to the Frankiphone (Space Harp) that he invented. His whole life is in tune with this vibration, and he communicates it singularly, channeling, one with the energy that he’s transmitting. An astronomer, and star himself, Cohran shines his light in conversation with enthusiasm and feeling that delivers a message of true tone and Unity. Here, Cohran’s concert is a talk. You can here all the beautiful melodies, the intuition and wisdom, the creativity and intention, as he shares prophetically about life.

Cohran made significant contributions to the Sun Ra Arkestra during the 60s. As a major figure in Chicago, he influenced the formation of the world renowned Earth, Wind and Fire, is the Father and mentor of 8 of the 9 members of the celebrated contemporary band Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, and has lead the independent community based Artistic Heritage Ensemble and Legacy groups. It was inspiring to hear him lecture in the early 2000s on KPFK 90.7FM’s Rise hosted by Mark Maxwell, to attend his weekly residency at Chicago’ restaurant Ethiopian Diamond several times, and to listen to his solo offerings in intimate venues like Hollywood, California’s Schindler House, as well as large ensemble presentations in theaters. Cohran is a humble giant and a musical being that generously gives his time, encouraging the enrichment and upliftment of those around him. In February 2012 we sat in Downtown, Los Angeles’ The Last Bookstore, with dublab on sound and Mochilla on video, while he was in town to perform with his sons as part of ArtDontSleep’s Homage event. It was an honor.

Blues Control brought their beautiful sonic waves into the dublab studio for a special live “Sprout Session” in advance of their Los Angeles concert presented by SASSAS. The Blues Control duo shared songs blending meditative tones with heavy psych rhythms that spread a warm glow to all open ears. The set included tunes from their new Valley Tangents album, out now on Drag City, as well as other gems. We were blown away by this session and we know you will be too!

Joshua Abrams is a longtime friend of dublab. Over the years he has ventured into our studio to perform with several different ensembles including Town & Country over a decade ago. We’ve always been fond of his rich music sensibilities and versatile talent. This time around he entered the dublab sphere with a guimbri and talented friends by his side. Collectively these musicians forming Natural Information Society graced Los Angeles for a show alongside The Cairo Gang at The Del Monte Speakeasy. The following day they all performed live as part of our “Proton Drive” broadcast hosted in the audio gear fantasy world of Vintage King Los Angeles. Emmett Kelly and his sound posse The Cairo Gang rumbled into Los Angeles in a dual power sound formation with Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society. We were lucky enough to circulate with this crew two days in a row as we co-presented their show at The Del Monte Speakeasy then caught up with them for back to back live “Sprout Sessions” as part of our Fall 2012 “Proton Drive” Fundraiser broadcasts. This was an extra special dublab broadcast hosted in the audio equipment dreamland Vintage King Los Angeles. The Cairo Gang set is a thing of sheer beauty. It starts softly then builds into a roaring wall of gorgeous noise. Get on the the good glide now by pressing play.

Anyone with an affinity for the further out side-of-things should familiarize themselves with our friend Fumitake Tamura, Tokyo resident and recording artist Bun. Graduate of the Tokyo University of Art as well as his local underground rap circuits, Tamura’s music melts contrasts between musical concepts like field-recordings and hip-hop arrangements… so we were beyond stoked when Hashim B. invited him to hop on our airwaves during the Spring 2012 Proton Drive. The closest you can get to this is a DT/AshTre/Dakim cocktail but when you wake up from that you’ll still be on American shores. Who knows where you’ll be after this?

VOLUMINOUS SPARKS is an LA based trio made up of OJO members Joshua Aster, Chris Avitabile (Collapsible Mammals), and Eamon Ore-Giron (DJ LENGUA). Their sound is an exploration into the spaces between acoustic and digital, minimalism and explosionism. They visited the dublab studio in the midst of our Fall 2012 “Proton Drive” Fundraiser to let loose code unlocking string vibrations. When activated the trio’s energy is one of expansive motion. Brogan Bentley is a rock solid brewer of good things. We were stoked to welcome him back into the dublab studio again to share another live dublab “Sprout Session.” Wowee! Hearing Brogan’s original, new music gives us great hope for this globular globe of a home called called Earth we’re spinning around on. Brogan makes the whirlwind journey worthwhile by slapping a smile wide across our faces with his great tunes. Kevin Haskins, member of Bauhaus, Tones On Tails, Love and Rockets, and many other projects came by the dublab studio for an interview. It was a very exciting moment for me. His music has been a huge influence on me and up to this day, I continue to be fascinated with the songs he helped compose and record. To sit with him to talk about past experiences and his creative process was a dream come true. I hope you enjoy it. -Ale

Koen Holtkamp previously enlightened our ears when he visited dublab with his band Mountains. This time he returns for a solo set of heavy synth set that starts in a series of electronic bleeps and building into a majestic wave of glorious sonic textures. Koen is a master of making majestic music and this solo session delivers with dividends from this great talent.

Gifted and Blessed graced the dublab studio for a live “Sprout Session” of electronic emanations in human soul tone form. He invoked a beautiful set of electronics that will lift you to the sky and higher. Also known as GB, Gifted and Blessed is a longtime friend of dublab and he vibrates in harmonic resonance with our collective on each collaborative action. We hope you enjoy this session and urge you to explore his sounds further. Epiphanies will surely ensue.

Ramona Gonzalez, otherwise known as the synthesizer crowned siren Nite Jewel, returned to the dublab studio for a live set in solo form. This “Sprout Session” features new music performed by Ramona in a straight ahead blast of beauty. This is pure pop in magic form, elegantly constructed with the pleasure of your ears in mind. Nite Jewel never ceases to share genuine greatness whether in the form of the recent album One Second of Love or via live performances such as the one here. Please enjoy this thoughtfully crafted soul transmission and keep your ears on the future for further love soon.

After a wild ride along the west coast, USF‘s excitement was hard to contain. Luckily we were able to capture it in this live “Sprout Session” that we bottled for you to open at home. Just be careful when you open it…

Mystery Cave frequently ventures into our circle from his slightly more southern Cali homebase of San Diego and brings with him great, easy vibes and music to match. His is the sound of solar rays crystallized and shining with flares of a heart coasting on warm waves. Mystery Cave set our ears adrift during his live performance in the dublab studio and we now offer this archive so you can join him on this journey once again.

Portland’s Grapefruit came by the dublab studio and transformed the office with his sound waves. It was a fresh reminder of Tangerines and other fruits that make you dream in the form of the Sorcerer’s soundtrack.

Wonderful and one of a kind collaboration between these two sound travelers. Sun Araw and Nanny Cantaloupe share the sound waves and align their frequencies in this live performance.

To celebrate the release of his album Iradelphic on Warp Records, Clark ventured into the dublab studio armed to the teeth with synthesizers and songs to share through them. Enjoy this double impact session as Clark kicks things off with a DJ set followed by an inspired live performance. Thanks to the crew at Warp for making this happen!

Mike Wexler’s sublime music is tinged with dark undertones that when gradually spun into being light up the room with melancholy beauty. This is music to float out of your body to. He provided these astral projection undercurrents when he visited the dublab studio for a back to back “Sprout Session” with his friend Koen Holtkamp. Rob Spector of the band Bronze sauntered down from his San Francisco turf to activate a live “Sprout Session” in the dublab studio under his solo guise Muscle Drum. He enlisted his longtime friend Jarond Gibbs to join him for the broadcast. Together they improvised every song live on the spot, other than their great cover of “Shadows On My Wall,” which is heard smack dab in the middle. So put your burrito binge on hold for a few hours and dig this set of jazz rock gospel swamp.

These two good friends can’t stop collaborating and making music together. Aside from the sounds they make on their own, Cat 500 and Low Leaf came by the studio and jammed for a while. The dublab staff got in a trance and chairs made out of neon lights started dancing in the air, then we were automatically transported to the Situation Room under the 405 freeway. Then they stopped and life went back to normal.

The ladies of TEEN came into dublab HQ for a (mostly) unplugged Sprout Session just before their set at The Echo last month. Their album In Limbo is full of dark, woodsy vibes and this session is no exception. This is quickly climbing our favorites of 2012 – discover the mysteries of TEEN in this exclusive performance!

Let’s all take a moment of silence then give into hot noise. Alex Gray has officially buried his alias of Heatwave to continue along the path of progression under different guises. We fortunately caught the last breath of his former musical beast and are happy to share it with you now. Enjoy this archive of Heatwave’s final performance, presented live on the dublab stage at Silverlake Jubilee 2012. Don’t throw those flowers on the grave, eat them and trip wildly.

Cody Farewell began producing electronic music under the name Snorlax at the age of 17, using a 4-track recorder, a drum machine, a gameboy, & a bass. With influences from all styles, Snorlax is a mixture of ambient, jungle, hip hop, house, vocal, IDM, & toy-beat with a unique melancholy aesthetic. He was a guest on DUBLAB’s Monday Music Meeting, and performed this entrancing Sprout Session for our listeners.

Archie Pelago is a trio comprised of Hirshi (trumpet, DJ), Cosmo D (cello, Ableton) and Kroba (sax, Ableton). Their performance at the dublab studio was nothing short of amazing, a perfect combo of acoustic instruments and electronics.

Julia Holter performed live at the Tonalism event that happened at the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock on July 23rd, 2011. She played live using only an acoustic piano. Everything else you hear in this recording is the natural echo of her voice bouncing around the high ceiling of the building.

M. Geddes Gengras makes waves well-tuned to turn your travels into the interstellar sort. Upon activation his synthesizers will teleport you to outer planes while setting your mind afloat in a bubble of pure bliss. He made this very sort of transformative magic happen under the desert skies of Marfa, Texas on March 10th, 2012. J D Emmanuel is one of the sweetest and most genuine artists we have ever encountered. His elevated, creative consciousness is a magnet for bright minds and ears. We were absolutely honored to have him grace the space laid out for our all night ambient happening, Tonalism, at Marfa, Texas’s incredible El Cosmico on March 10, 2012. J D performed a set that was not only a great highlight of this event but a highlight of our lives. We love community gatherings so on June 19, 2012 dublab hosted a happening called “Brunch Broadcast.” This was an afternoon of great music, food & friends held at Atwater Crossing in Los Angeles. We invited some of our favorite DJs and musicians to share music with those gathered at ATX and beamed to others listening remotely around the universe. The masterful guitarist Fabiano do Nascimento joined us for a live performance of beautiful, solo guitar music. Enjoy this archive of his set.

On June 19, 2012 dublab celebrated the winter wonder of sunny LA with a Sunday “Brunch Broadcast” live from Atwater Crossing. We invited some of our favorite bands and DJs to come share some music, a delicious meal and great conversation with friends. The incredibly talented and warm hearted Aaron Embry joined us for a live performance featuring his incredibly sweet voice, guitar and a tiny piano. We hope you dig this archive.

dublab programmed a night of music as part of Ace Hotel’s “Desert Gold” series that zapped into being during Coachella 2012. dublab’s very own Jimmy Tamborello aka Dntel performed live in the Amigo Room to an assembled crowd of fans. After many years of not seeing her, Blevin came by the dublab studios to share some of her new music with a phenomenal live performance. After arriving to dublab, and catching up on various subjects of the past (and the present), including how are so and so doing, and whatever happened to that guy that played the recorder like a maniac, she plugged her gear and turned us into new sounds that, just as always, blew our minds. Another great thing about her visit was that Kevin Blechdom came along, and apparently they (Blectum From Blechdom) are working on a new record and playing some shows live.

He has been making some of the most classic sounding but forward leaning dub music on the planet for well over 15 years. He has worked with legendary vocalists Big Youth, Michael Rose of Black Uhuru and Ranking Joe amongst many others but his sizzling instrumental versions alone are enough to shake you to the core. Wooshie hops on first to hypnotize us with stellar tones tricked out live and vivid. Galapagoose, who appeared on the Leaving Records show last week, takes the helm next to give us a deeper glimpse into his dynamic, in-the-moment music creation. Prince Jazzbo is a serious legend in reggae music who has been burning up mics for over 40 years. His toasts on Studio One rhythms and his work with Lee “Scratch” Perry are deeply seeded in the Jamaican canon. The heroic champions at Dub Club presented Prince Jazzbo’s first ever US show on July 26, 2012. We are thrilled to warm up your ears with a live dublab broadcast featuring Prince Jazzbo alongside another legend of dancehall, the one and only Tippa Lee. He joined Jazzbo for this session of toasting and ear zapping tune vibration. Dub Club Echodelic selector Tom Chasteen was on hand to run tings and chat with these cats about their storied history and current creative action.
