Revisiting The Redundancy of the Angelic

07.30.24

Los-Angeles based composer, writer and researcher Anna Heflin revisits her 2021 album The Redundancy of the Angelic: An Interluding Play! In addition to playing the album, she shares the musical and literary inspirations that went into creating the record.

Album Notes:

There’s something that hooked me about webs. In the dry heat of the Los Angeles summertime, the spiders swell until you have to wave a broomstick around like mad just to avoid facetime. You see them one minute, glittering and dewy, and with the shift of a shadow, they glide into that invisible space. I love to sit and watch them build with the songbirds and crows as my soundtrack. Would you like to join?

The works are inspired by spiders, apocalyptic angels and my encounters in Los Angeles. The text and music are woven together and of equal importance in this Interluding Play, the first of its kind to my knowledge. The Santa Anas are blowing, the red tides glowing, Laguna is home to the Resurrection Stone and the 405 is (still) never the answer. Come on in.

I watched the birds every morning when I returned home to Pasadena from Brooklyn during the summer of 2020. The birds have very little musical material available, but they shuffle the little cells around enough to give the merciful illusion that there is change. Unless you listen for it, you’d never know that every day was sung to the same tune. Good morning. – AH
