Bubblegum & Other Delights

09.22.19

Writers Becky Ebenkamp and Nikki Kreuzer (Imagine Betty and Veronica without that pesky Archie to fight over…) are the pop culture pundits who serve as your musical apologists on Bubblegum & Other Delights, dublab.com’s Sunday night radio show dedicated to the much-maligned, sugary-sweet musical genre that is the true innocent victim of fake news. With humor, smarts and great attention to detail, the hosts lead listeners on a cruise through a candy land of sugary-sweet songs crafted by the Brill Building’s best and performed by pseudonym-slinging session musicians—tunes crammed full of innocence-sounding, double-entendre lyrics that melt in your mouth, not in your hands.

Secret Conspiratorial Bonus Song! Live at P.J.'s: Beastie Boys Long-Suppressed Show Notes:  Our theme tonight was fake concerts, or records/songs that pipe in crowd noises over studio recordings to emulate the feel of a live audience. Think laugh tracks for LPs. . The central piece was the debut of the Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus on Buddah Records (1968), which was said to be recorded at Carnegie Hall and starring its bubblegum acts the Ohio Express, The 1910 Fruitgum Co, The Music Explosion, Lt. Garcia’s Magic Music Box, JCW Rat Finks, the Teri Nelson Group, The St. Louis Invisible Marching Band and the 1989 Musical Marching Zoo. . Because so much of this record is obviously “fake live” (inside the label it mentions the name of the studio it was recorded at), I have always thought the producers made this whole concert up. . I was wrong—so wrong! Carnegie Hall confirmed that the concert did indeed take place on 6/7/68. Thank you, Rob Hudson and Jami Jurich at CH! Listen to the show (or think about that date) to learn why it didn’t get a lot of media coverage. . According to a New York Times story from 6/8/68 (the day after the concert), about 2,000 people attended. Carnegie Hall has (and in 1968 had) roughly 2,800 seats, so the venue was likely more than two-thirds full. . Ultimately, I found some cool pics from the event. You can view them on our IG page at @bubblegum_OD) . I spoke to Dean Kastran, singer of the Ohio Express, who confirmed that he played the gig. Neat story: The parents of the teenaged OE members surprised them by showing up at the big NYC concert! Imagine being able to brag to the neighbors, “Yeah, well, MY kid played Carnegie Hall…” . I tried reaching the K&K media contact several times for this story, but never heard back. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO HIDE?! . Background: Some K&K “bands” heard on hit singles (like the OE’s “Yummy, Yummy, Yummy”) featured studio musicians/singers based on real bands the producers signed. The real band’s job was to tour and promote these songs. . This Carnegie Hall show was much more than a concert—it was a full-on happening for tots. Aside from the 45-piece (or so) Orchestra, the Circus featured a dancing gorilla, a dancing midget and several go-go girls.

. Dean Kastran and fellow Ohio Express member Dale Powers still occasionally play music together. They are touring with “Re-Livin’ The Dream” featuring The Cyrkle, The Outsiders and The Music Explosion this Fall and hoping to add more dates in 2020.
