Floating World Pictures: Japanese Avant-Garde, Tape and Environmental Music for Writing Emails to
11.09.22

London-based “Loud Ambient” duo Floating World Pictures conclude their 2-part series for dublab with a 2hr mix from Raimund Wong, drawing extensively from the lineage of electroacoustic and early sampling-based music from Japan.
Featuring some of the country’s earliest musique concréte pieces from 1950s up to recordings from this decade, it is an exploration of active/passive listening music that, through utilising the manipulation of recorded sound, discusses and dissects how we interact with our surroundings and the wider cultural sphere.
The selection is augmented by exclusive new cassette 4-track pieces by Rai made using field recordings from Japan made by Akihide Monna, and tape loops generated in free improvisations. FWP is Chestnutt (Snapped Ankles) & graphic/sound artist Raimund Wong; they are joined by Alabaster DePlume, Danalogue (The Comet is Coming), members of Southbank Gamelan Players and Bo Ningen amongst others on their debut album released in May on Friendly Recordings.
