This special No Wave edition of Celsius Drop celebrates Who You Staring At?: Visual culture of the no wave scene in the 1970s and 1980s, an exhibition on view through May 1, 2023 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris featuring the art of Scott & Beth B, Rhys Chatham, Joseph Nechvatal, Barbara Ess, Dan Graham, Glenn Branca, Karole Armitage, Raymond Pettibon, Vivienne Dick and Kathy Acker, along with music and ephemeral materials from the influential movement. No Wave sprung forth from the Lower East side of Manhattan from around 1977 to 1986, a time and space where urban decline gave way to vibrant expression. The scene was centered in sound but spiraled out into energetic eruptions of audio, visual and performance. My guest, musician and artist Joseph Nechvatal, was engaged in these myriad sound and vision expressions and as early as 1980, was deeply involved with the ABC No Rio art space and Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine (click here for a Tellus special on Celsius Drop). To kick off the first hour of Celsius Drop, Joseph has kindly put together an offering of iconic No Wave sounds.

The second hour of the program features my 2018 Red Bull Radio Fireside Chat with Ikue Mori who was the drummer for seminal No Wave band DNA and has continued to make astonishing work over the years as a drummer, electronic musician, composer, and graphic designer.
