Between South and North America, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, exists an isthmus made up of seven countries, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Belize, also known as Central America. Escuchar al Istmo, Listen to the Isthmus, focuses on the diverse musical and cultural landscape of Central America. Through music, vinyl record collections and special guests, the show explores cultural context, nostalgia and experiences of the diaspora. Tune in to hear the past and present sounds of the many cultures of Central America.
This month’s show features a conversation with guest DJ Lexaceli discussing her Salvadoran – American upbringing and a curated set highlighting her diasporic musical influences.
Alexa (Lexaceli) is an LA-born and raised DJ from the 818. She brings a curator’s ear and a community-first spirit to every set, channeling the nostalgia of her family’s music collection into something future-facing and boldly her own. Through deep understanding and a commitment to cultural competence, she treats her DJ work as a form of archival preservation, honoring the sounds of LA and championing the power of third spaces.
