Michael Robinson will premiere and discuss his new release Lotus-Pollen, and also Carnelian Compass, a 2011 release.

From a pastoral clarinet transported to India, to a Rave synthesizer, a Steppenwolf organ, and an argosy of wood, metal, and skin percussion bridging continents, I spent the summer and early autumn of 2020 growing and distilling Lotus-Pollen, perhaps a Los Angeles symphony for the sheer scale of it, endeavoring to transpose the ongoing chaos outside into a positive amalgam.

My album title is from Sanskrit verses by Dharmakirti (600-660) translated by John Brough (1917 -1984). 
When the East
Gave birth to the Moon,
Love was the dancer at the feast;
The heavens smiled for joy;
And the Wind strewed the perfumed dust
Of lotus-pollen in the courtyard of the sky. 

While listening to the finalized realization of Carnelian Compass for the first time, replete with textures woven from jhaptal, dadra, rupak and kaharwa chand, I imagined Franz Liszt visiting nineteenth-century India, meeting some of the court musicians, and improvising on ragas with them, playing a specially tuned harpsichord in the manner of a harmonium.
