Superpositions: Percussive & Gal Pal

Superpositions: the action of placing one thing on or above another, especially so that they coincide.

Though feelings may appear to hold their private homes, emotions are rather one of the same: happiness is sadness is anger is love is loss is grief is pleasure is life. Join Quantoom as they offer you an opportunity to practice catharsis through sound, holding two distinct energies side-by-side with every episode. Quantoom’s Superpositions holds the door open to intertwine emotions once believed to be mutually exclusive. Offering space for all that comes, goes, and comes again is the key to finding your humble abode.

Let’s find it, together.

Gal Pal, the musical project of Emelia Austin, Shayna Hahn, and Nico Romero, is currently based in Los Angeles, CA. Having met as college students in Santa Cruz, their initial collaborations stemmed from a shared lack of formal music education and novice to their instruments – creating a space within each other free of judgment, pressure, and rules. What began as shapeless play dates between classes, quickly took form after a house show in 2016. Having been thrown onto the bill, the three scraped a set list together and picked a name. A year later, the group would go on to record their debut album GIRLISH (2017). They’ve performed near-ceaselessly since, moving back to their hometowns in LA and catching the ear of and opening for bands like Pile, Ian Sweet, Tanukichan, Palehound, Squirrel Flower, Momma and Cryogeyser. The songs on GIRLISH and subsequent EP Unrest/Unfeeling (2019) were written as Gal Pal began — all three in a room, trading riffs and rhythms until something stuck. This process shifted during the pandemic when their separation led them to write alone. The challenge sparked a new sound, focused on the individual, crafting songs in each members’ preferred direction. After waiting for safer times and sending countless voice memos, the group met in person and began working with bass player Cole Brossus. A year since releasing most recent studio record This and Other Gestures, the four continue to live in Los Angeles, working toward what’s next.

Catch Gal Pal opening for Babehoven and Stephen Steinbrink at The Echo on Sunday June 9. Tickets can be found here.
