Cornish cosmic relaxation institution Seahawks is helmed by perennial co-captains Jon Tye (founder of Lo Recordings) and Pete Fowler (acclaimed Welsh visual artist). Regardless of where or how their music is heard, within it are seeds of transformative positivity, to be embraced, absorbed, or shared as befits the needs of the listener.
Japan has always been a source of inspiration for Seahawks, the music, the visual aesthetic and the openness to our music since we first started has been amazing. This mix is a tribute to the musicians we love and in particular to Taro, Calm and aus who created such wonderful remixes for us.
I first visited Japan in the late 90s and immediately fell in love with the many aspects of Japanese culture, from the arts to music to food and design and the people.
Since then I’ve been lucky to have visited Japan about 12 times, with the last visit there with Jon as Seahawks to play live and DJ at a brilliant outdoor festival in an out of season Paddington bear ski resort ( I seem to remember, or was it a dream?).
I was lucky enough to catch a lot of gigs and DJs during my trips and consumed so much music from friends, amazing record shops and taking a chance on music that I knew nothing of in the bigger stores to dusty flea markets.
After buying lots of old records (that were near impossible to find back home) in the amazing second hand shops of Osaka, and Tokyo, I started to listen to more contemporary Japanese music.
From dance, pop, experimental and electronic music, it seemed never ending with an incredibly rich seam of wonderful sounds.
Fast forward to the last few years and we’ve been lucky enough to work with some of our favourite Japanese contemporary electronic music producers for the new Seahawks remix EP.
Each of the 3 artists that have contributed to this EP have brought such a beautiful touch to their mixes that seduced us at first on their original productions.
I can never put my finger on what makes some Japanese artists produce their work in such a sublime and singular way but I think all of these wonderful artists have emotional and deep ingredients to their craft that we really love and hope that you will too and will explore their past releases.
