dublab presents the Sounds of Now

Sound Colour Vibration and dublab proudly present Volume 5 in our ongoing series of music mixes in streaming and mp3 formats with “In The Next Life.” Focusing on the modern electronic movement, “In The Next Life” represents a perspective of the many producers who’ve made a heavy impact on us over the last few years.

Beginning with the elegant and mystic beat work of LA native Aleos, the journey then dives deep into the majestic world of beat orchestration by Lost Midas. Recently signed with the illustrious Tru Thoughts, Lost Midas is one of our favorite producers and is a perfect bridge for the works of one of the scenes most notable musicians, Flying Lotus. Pulling from one of his older pieces, the sonic reflection of his first album is a heavy influence on where many producers have been taking sound and will be a definitive statement of this era through time. Lawrence Lindell is next up, taking the mix into a completely different territory with wild scales of piano and a very experimental texture to back it. Lawrence has been on our radar for a year now and is really bringing a lot of elements and influence from Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Venetian Snares and others. His work is phenomenal and we highly recommend looking into his music further to hear the more percussion driven work he does.

Kratos Himself is another upcoming producer that I really had to include for this mix project, especially with the work he did on his latest EP. Huge drums, elegant melodies and a raw organic feel, it’s a refreshing tone to the more synthetic areas of production culture. RocketNumberNine, Juj, Eb7#9, ELOS and Eureka the Butcher all stretch the mix out into some very divergent realms, venturing into various experimental regions of the beat movement that we are absolutely in love with right now. Jyoti was the center piece of the mix and is a gem to us. If you haven’t heard her, we welcome you to join us in experiencing some of the most innovative sounds out right now. Jyoti is one of the newest architects in fusion music and we will be following everything she does in 2014 and beyond. The mix drifts into a sequence of material that came out right after 2010 with Prefuse 73, Gonjasufi and Teebs. Prefuse 73 brings along underground experimental artist Nico Turer, Gonjasufi enlists the talents of Oneohtrix Point Never for a special remix and Teebs is accompanied by the lovely Gaby Hernandez. This is foundation music for generations to come and is a high mark in the advancement of creative electronica. Odd Nosdam is the ultimate architect to all the experimental beat makers, including everyone on this mix and his inclusion near the end was a last minute decision that I am really happy with. Matthewdavid finishes the listening experiencing out with a very atonal and magical piece, showing us an entirely different portal and reality of music.

This mix was created with the deepest admiration and respect given to these artists and we highly recommend purchasing any of these artists records. They are all on really great labels and have been working very hard to bring the world something authentic and new. We will be launching a plethora of themed mixes in our Sound & Colour Lab series soon along with eclectic mixes such as this one. Please enjoy and pass around to as many as you know! – – Erik Otis (Sound Colour Vibration)
