Raza, Accordions, and Rock highlights a small portion of the Frontera Collection by carefully curating a 2-hour show using the music that is archived and sourced from the collection. The music played on this show will focus on the intersection of the African American diaspora, American Pop Culture, and the Mexican American experience through a musical lens. We’ll examine how R&B, Soul, and Rock existed in musical history of songs recorded and sung in Spanish or English and or a combination of both. ¡Vámonos Recio!

American dance crazes have also had a significant impact on the Latin American dance scene, with many popular dance styles originating in the United States making their way south of the border. The 1920s saw the rise of the Charleston, a lively dance craze that swept across the United States and Latin America alike. The 1950s brought rock and roll to the forefront, inspiring dances like the twist, the Jerk, and the swim. But we see happening is that American music scene for the first time is being influenced by musical styles of Latin America. With stars like Perez Prado and Tito Rodriguez, we begin to see a defined musical crossover fueled by Dance Crazes. The influence of American dance crazes on Latin American music is a testament to the power of cultural exchange, and the enduring appeal of dance as a means of self-expression and connection to both the dominant culture and its immigrant communities.
