Anika has a second video for her self-title EP (not to be confused with her self-titled album), out now on Stones Throw Records. “In The City” is another cover, this time of a song by The Chromatics. The video, which depicts a bizarre male pageant set somewhere in Eastern Europe, turns a history of female objectification and traditional bride selection on its head, with a young woman choosing her mate from a numbered line-up of track-suited candidates that awkwardly strut and dance to show off their physiques. A mirror prevents the young woman from seeing her suitors’ faces, so she decides the winner entirely based on his body. His prize is her hand in marriage and a plastic baggy containing an internal organ (maybe a heart?) from some large animal. This strange foray into the imaginary backwaters of Eastern European culture was directed by Kyle Whittington & Joe Broady, and sharply contradicts the noirish descriptions of a dark, shining city conjured by the song.
