Bubblegum & Other Delights

02.27.22

Contrary to popular opinion, Bubblegum isn’t a four-letter word. Bubblegum & Other Delights is dedicated to the sounds of sunshine that reigned roughly from 1968 to 1974. The playlist spans the Archies to the Zoom soundtrack, and revisits groups like the Beagles, the Cufflinks, the Banana Splits, Josie & the Pussycats, the Jackson Five and the Sweet. Warning: BG&OD is your one-stop shop for that perfect three-minute pop fix. These rare pop confections may ruin your appetite. “Other Delights” tie Gum to genres like punk, soul, or polka to show how all music connects or to highlight a theme, such as “Tiger Beat Boogaloo,” “Bo [Diddley] Knows Bubblegum,” or “Country-a-Go-Go.”

Fasten your seat belt—it’s gonna be a chewy ride!

This episode of Bubblegum OD is a retrospective on the career of singer/songwriter Johnny Cymbal, Man of 1,000 Names and Voices! We’ll track Johnny’s career from pouty, 15-year-old pouty to crafter of country tune for the Burrito Brothers—with tons of Novelty & Bubblegum in between!

Will the REAL Johnny Cymbal Please Stand Up?
With guest Chris Davidson

When Johnny Cymbal began his music career at age 15, he instinctively knew how to identify, mimic, mix, match, and discard pop music styles with precision timing as they moved in and out of fashion. As a result, his performing, songwriting and producing career took on many tones and tapestries of sound from 1961 to 1982. While a huge hit record always eluded him, he cut 45s for numerous labels under a dozen different names. Here’s a sample of them
