I recently gained access to the Now Again Record Catalog on disco.ac, and I picked out a few tracks that inspired me the most. Encompassing funk, jazz, and soul, these tracks follow strands of black music genealogy throughout time, and continue into the future. Towards the end, I indulge in a bit of a tribute to Moodymann, one of my greatest inspirations – all vinyl, mixed with a bit of elbow grease on some finicky 70s turntables. This mix is less motivated by literature than the previous episodes, but is a nice meditation on the overall themes all the same, and is a token of my appreciation for the invaluable archival work being done by Now Again.

B.A.S. is a collective effort lead by Gum.mp3 to evaluate the genealogy of black music.

The format is more like homies sharing with each other, and less like a music history professor boring you to death. With help from friends and peers, an assortment of reading materials, recommended listening, and questions to consider will be assembled. We don’t have all the answers, but we hope you’ll find them with us.
