From larger than life blues legends like Robert Johnson, to the fringe jazz-funk experiments of Dick Khoza, a clear line is drawn in the development of melodic phrasing and vocal stylings. James Brown and his contemporaries serve as a bridge in the development of blues laden soul into the more dance oriented funk, and later what we know as contemporary pop music.
