Live KSCR Mix
05.26.99

Frosty’s original Celsius Drop at KSCR was a sort of proto-dublab — a college radio show in the late ’90s where the dublab founder would hone his approach to selecting and interviewing, and begin expanding his (now seemingly endless) rolodex of indie artists. Touring with Six Degrees labelmates Cheb I Sabbah and Bossacucanova, Toby Marks aka Banco De Gaia was in LA in May 1999 to play a solo set. While in town, Marks came by USC to spin with Frosty for a couple hours and chat about everything from finding inspiration in guitar bands like Radiohead to getting into acid through UK pirate radio.
Originally a rock guitarist and drummer who became more interested in making dance and world music, Banco De Gaia was one of the most crucial ‘90s producers to marry trip-hop, ambient dub and house from within the accretion zone of “exotic” international sounds that is London. Back when global electronic music covered far less territory and was produced by fewer people, Banco de Gaia (and his labelmates) represented the gold standard.
On this mix, Marks gives a shout out to other future-forward, globally minded producers like Jazzanova and Massive Attack, and throws in some Adrian Sherwood — whose work with African Head Charge (and really the whole On-U Sound label) was truly some the most groundbreaking global electronica to come out in the ’80s and ’90s.
