dublab presents the Sounds of Now

One way to gain insight into a person — especially a DJ — is to flip through their records. Not the stack that’s carefully crafted to convey a specific vibe, or one that deeply immerses you in a genre, but the cluttered pile by the turntable. The stuff they’ve been listening to that week. As a DJ and producer, Chico Sonido is so well known as purveyor of fine Latin beats in the molds of nu cumbia, hip-hop and dub that you might wonder what he gets into when no one is looking.

We’re in luck: this mix from 2005 features a bunch of on-brand Chico picks (vintage Latin psych rock and funk plus indie hip-hop) mixed with seemingly random selections from the various corners of the record store. It’s illuminating to hear Madlib, The Art of Noise, Mount Eerie, Alain Goraguer, Aphex Twin and Brazilian Girls in one place, and Chico makes it all come together, dropping in some of his own productions as well.
