2092 presents... Funk Radio

Journey into the massive musical mind of post-rock drummer and producer John Herndon of the legendary Chicago bands Tortoise and Isotope 217.

A sort of window into the indie electronic mindset of the early aughts, this excellent set features Herndon all the way back in 2004 blessing dublab’s studio with a mix of diverse, deeply groove-oriented tracks pulled from all over the map: From the experimental dub of Adrian Sherwood’s African Head Charge project, dub-reggae of Johnny Clarke and deep jazz-funk of Herbie Hancock all the way to the post-bop of Eric Dolphy, out-there post-punk of This Heat, and late-‘90s electronica of Mira Calix, Tortoise and Fennesz. There’s even indie hip-hop in multiple languages.

This is one epic 3-hour rabbit hole worth falling in.

FROM THE VAULTS is an ongoing curation project produced by Ben Sinclair, resurfacing rare live performances and DJ sets recorded during dublab’s first ten years.
