Live dublab Mix
05.20.03

In 2003, Kate Simko lead dublab listeners on a dislocating trip with this excellent, globe trotting mix. The set starts off with Gil Scott-Heron’s strong, indignant poem about the 1970s, “The New Deal” (following a rare radio interview) before moving into several selections of electronic music from Santiago, Chile. Simko then guides us through house and downtempo sounds out of the US, and finally ends things with De La Soul’s jazz instrumental, “I Be Blowin'” — featuring saxophonist Maceo Parker, who played with Parliament-Funkadelic and James Brown.
Before she was a top-billed house DJ out of Chicago and a producer releasing Chicago- and Detroit-influenced records on labels like Ghostly Intl., Spectral Sound and Kupei Musika, Simko spent time in Chile studying and composing. She connected with Andres Bucci there, and collaborated on the excellent Detalles project before kicking her solo efforts into high gear. Enjoy this session from a formative era in her career.
