Black Audio Society
12.08.23

This mix is a condensed version of my set at Empire in Austin, Texas! Linked below are some relevant and timely Afro-Palestinian texts (mirrored from the Dweller blog and re-uploaded for accessibility), and the second half of this episode is a guest mix from Dame via his Nomadic Rhythm Group project.
Dame, a Michigan native & NYC based DJ, describes his practice as “traveling between worlds” and utilizes “Nomadic Rhythm Group” as vehicle for such travel. Whether it’s behind the decks blending tracks, or bouncing between different artistic mediums, he’s constantly weaving between the gears as they turn.
Dame is influenced and inspired by his midwestern background, and the Detroit/Chicago music that served as the soundtrack; a lifelong exposure to the endless possibilities of sampling, and particularly how tracks become “recontextualized” in the process. By journeying “between worlds” Dame provides us with sonics that feel familiar, yet sound fresh. In this instance, he demonstrates this practice through various juke, footwork, and raps.

Black Audio Society is a collective effort lead by Gum.mp3 for the conservation and enjoyment of black music. The aim is to identify sociopolitical context, analyze the development and mixture of genres over time, and imagine the future of black music in both theory and practice. Through guest mixes and periodic deep dives into the history of this music, B.A.S. serves as an alternative destination for black music discovery and appreciation.
