dublab presents the Sounds of Now

JEREMY SOLE is on a mission to show how music is a singular universal language, and that each culture’s rhythms and melodies are no more than slang – different accents of the same mother tongue. He has been collecting vinyl from around the world for over 35 years to craft his own sound. Sole’s DJ sets and remixes juxtapose global sounds into a sonic ritual for the “genre non-conforming”, blending or downright transcending era, style and tempo.

Sole is widely known for his weekly KCRW radio show that just ended in it’s 18th year, where he helped break many now-major artists with their first-ever radio plays including Black Pumas, Thee Sacred Souls, Hiatus Kaiyote, Michael Kiwanuka and The Shakes (now Alabama Shakes). He aired world radio debuts of music for Santana, Saul Williams, Chicano Batman, Rhye, Aaron Frazer and countless others. You can listen back to years of the archived shows at www.kcrw.com/people/jeremy-sole

He has had the honor of sharing the stage and/or recording in the studio with hundreds of his inspirations over his career, including Stevie Wonder, Parliament, Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Moses Sumney, James Blake and many more. Sole was the last DJ to open for both Ray Charles and Gil Scott-Heron on what turned out to be their final concerts. He deejayed for Sly Stone’s birthday party, worked on music for a year with Ms. Lauryn Hill, enlisted Daptone musicians to reimagine a 1976 classic for David Bowie in his final days, and was asked to spin traditional New Orleans funeral dirges atop a giant animatronic octopus with Susan Sarandon, leading a procession of thousands through Burning Man to bring Timothy Leary’s ashes to the temple. So many stories… It’s been a hell of a ride.

For over three decades Sole has used music and event curation to produce and DJ for hundreds of fundraisers, and continues to use his platform to influence change until equality and justice are karmically recalibrated worldwide. You can find this sentiment curated throughout his prolific multi-media series #NeuralEpidural on his Instagram account, that he explains as ‘micro epiphanies for the great awakening.’

Sole has produced remixes for DAVID BOWIE, FEMI KUTI (Nigeria), ALSARAH (Sudan), THIEVERY CORPORATION, SOLA ROSA (New Zealand), ROCKY DAWUNI (Ghana), NOVALIMA (Peru), CHAKA KHAN (with RASHIDA and SHEILA E.), QUANTIC (Colombia), DOM LA NENA (Brasil), BECK, JAZZANOVA (Germany) and others. His festival performances include Coachella, Lightning In A Bottle, Bahidora, Worldwide Festival, Joshua Tree Music Fest, Calvi On The Rocks, Cosmico among others.

Since moving from Chicago to Los Angeles at the turn of the century, Sole has co-founded three ongoing event series’ that have developed cult-like followings and mythic reputations – AFRO FUNKÉ (2004-2014, a weekly ritual of Afrobeat and global sounds), theLIFT (2010-2017, international DJs at nomadic warehouses until dawn) – and currently LE FRIQUE SONIQUE (monthly at the Moroccan Lounge in Little Tokyo).
