While the global pandemic may have put a damper on our adventures in clubbing, music still has the power to transport us to places unknown. For now, the greatest club on earth may exist in our imagination – Discoteca Imaginaria. Each episode takes listeners to the scenes, clubs, regions and technology that have shaped our sonic history.

David Mancuso, a then 25-year-old record collector and audiophile, threw his first “Love Saves the Day” party on Saturday, February 14, 1970. For $2.50, guests were treated to coat check, non-alcoholic refreshments, high fidelity sound, and a selection of music as diverse as the crowd in attendance. This vehemently non-commercial, unpretentious loft party would not only invent an entirely new type of dance culture, but inspire the likes of Dany Krivit, Larry Levan, Nicky Siano and DJ Harvey to become DJs themselves. However, fame and legacy were never the intended outcomes of the Loft. Mancuso’s singular mission for his gatherings was to build community through music, one record at a time.
