Out There ~ a Field Recording Program

09.26.24

Voyage with dublab into new worlds. Each week we present a long-form field recording that will transport you through the power of sound.

Intakes are points of transition, where glacial and spring fed waterways from the Sierra Nevada watershed are captured and diverted into concrete channels and pipes that merge with the Los Angeles Aqueduct. From there, the water is transported southward over 300 miles of terrain to supply the megalopolis; the lifeblood of our Cyborg Watershed. Owens River splits at the Los Angeles Aqueduct intake near Aberdeen, California. About 300-350 cfs of water goes into the aqueduct and about 40-90 cfs continues down the Owens River channel and is pumped back into the aqueduct near the Owens Lake, with some water allowed to flow to the Owens Valley delta. This field recording was made in the Owens River with an underwater microphone (hydrophone) below Aberdeen before it reaches Owens Lake. This is the fifth recording in a series of field recordings from various locations along the Los Angeles Aqueduct.

Tune-in, open up, and venture out there as we take excursions into evocative audio fields together.
