As an archivist / librarian, T-Kay brings an eye and ear for the historical, unique, and transnational to her musical curation. The Archive of Feelings is a celebration of sounds and struggles of everyday life across linguistic and geographic boundaries gathered through serendipitous findings from around the world. T-Kay joined the dublab family as an intern in 2006 and hosted her first show “The Afternoon Love-In” in early 2007. Prior to dublab, T-Kay hosted “Hooray for Everything!” from 2001-2005 on KSPC Radio (Claremont, CA) and “Hip Hop Hooray” from 2009-2015 on KOOP Radio (Austin, TX).

Oh this month’s episode, T-Kay is joined by Mar of the vinyl-only party Nochenegra (CDMX) and Diego Guerrero and Eduardo Gomez of the Altura LA gallery to play records and discuss some of their shared artistic, musical, and cultural circuits between LA and Mexico City.

NOCHENEGRA

Mariana Maduro de Oliveira AKA Mar is a vinyl selector focused on rhythms from Latin America and the Caribbean. Born in Caracas, she grew up between Venezuela and northeastern Brazil where she developed her musical taste for Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Venezuelan folklore, and Brazilian popular music (MPB). In 2015, Mar migrated to Mexico City and founded Nochenegra in 2017. While Nochenegra started as a monthly vinyl-only party, it has since grown into a collective of selectors/friends and a large community of people who love music, records, and dancing.

ALTURA LA

Altura LA is an art gallery and studio space located in Lincoln Heights, one of LA’s oldest neighborhoods. As an interdisciplinary collaboration between visual arts, music, and fashion, Altura LA houses a variety of exhibitions and events that bring together local artists and the community. Members John Acevedo, Eduardo Gomez, Diego Guerrero, Nalani Hernández-Melo, and Adrian Huerta team up year round to amplify and elevate authentic stories and deliver experiences that resonate with the working class communities they form a part of.
