Seeing It As You Really Are

01.25.24

The Urxed (Robert Barber) delivers to you his own brand of monthly musical crushes, old and new, as well as sharing his zone with guest crushes, live or in the mix.

This month, we have 20 year anniversary mix by Chris Tipton, the driving force behind the Upset The Rhythm label, delivering an extensive musical overview of the history of the label portion of the collective, rounded out by a shorter mini-(but mega)-mix by Rob/The Urxed’s choice selections from the huge and diverse UTR catalog.

~Listen to the accompanying interview with The Urxed and Chris here~

Upset The Rhythm is an independent record label based in London with a varied roster of leftfield artists and bands. They also operate as a diverse DIY live music promoter, which formed in 2003 while its members were organising a concert for Deerhoof. To date the collective has organised about 2000 shows, while the label is at around 160 releases. Upset The Rhythm shows occur weekly in venues across London from smaller DIY hubs like Power Lunches and Cafe Oto, to more established venues like The Roundhouse. They have worked with Tate Britain and Frieze magazine on their music programming, as well as other events such as an all day charity concert with artist David Shrigley for Amnesty International and co-founding the art/music festival Yes Way with London gallery Auto Italia South East. The record label began in the Summer of 2005, funded by a gift of profits from a The Evens show by Ian MacKaye. The label’s first release was a mini-album by Death Sentence: Panda!, followed by debut releases by John Maus, No Age and Future Islands, while also promotes the UK’s DIY music scene, releasing records by Trash Kit, Cold Pumas, The Pheromoans, Pega Monstro, Silver Fox, The World and Terry.
