Last year, Toby Marks — AKA electronic music trailblazer Banco de Gaia — released deluxe reissues of his two game-changing albums: 1994’s Maya and 1995’s Last Train to Lhasa, each a masterpiece of atmospheric, world-inflected music. The two re-releases put into perspective both the huge influence Marks has had on the last 20 years of electronic music and the ground he has covered since, which includes the jazzy, semi-rock-oriented sounds rendered by Banco’s expansion into a three-piece band and the prog-rock gestures he incorporates on his forthcoming record, The Ninth of 9 Hearts.
