Celsius Drop

11.03.16

This week Frosty turned over the reigns of his Celsius Drop show to sound scholar Domenic Priore who played some of the key numbers that led to the November, 1966 “Riot on Sunset Strip.” Some of the songs we are featuring were performed at The 50th Anniversary of the Sunset Strip Demonstrations concert, held at Echoplex and The Echo in November of 2016 — artists from the ’60s such as Love, The Mothers of Invention, Brenda Holloway, The Other Half and The Premiers. Domenic literally wrote the book on this subject, so you know this show was on point.

This episode of Celsius Drop was a build up to a big show Domenic produced in L.A. on November 12, 2016. Here is the original announcement:

50th Anniversary of the Sunset Strip Demonstrations, 1966
Saturday, November 12, 2016, 6 p.m. @ Echoplex, 1154 Glendale Boulevard and The Echo, 1822 Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, California

On Saturday, November 12, 2016 Spaceland, The Echo and Domenic Priore will present an event to commemorate the 50 year anniversary of the Sunset Strip demonstrations, also known as “the riots on Sunset Strip.” The show will be a tribute to the 1960s Los Angeles music scene with performances from new artists inspired by that time, plus some of the original pioneers.

Fifty years ago on November 12, 1966, young rock fans protested against a 10 p.m. curfew for rock clubs. The Sunset Strip at the time was a mecca for music and the new counterculture but it also resulted in traffic jams and complaints from residents and business owners, who pressured the city and county to get rid of the kids, the clubs and the congestion. Young rock fans interpreted efforts to enforce curfew and loitering laws as an infringement on their civil rights. The history of the event has been documented in Priore’s book, Riot on Sunset Strip: Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Last Stand in Hollywood (Jawbone Press, London).

Love Revisited, The Pandoras, The Premiers, Randy Holden (Sons of Adam/The Other Half) performing with The Loons, Brenda Holloway, The Schizophonics and The Creation Factory with guest appearance from Mothers of Invention members Don Preston and Bunk Gardner will be some of the bands playing in both The Echo and Echoplex. DJ sets will be provided by 1960s Garage DJ Tony the Tyger (Satisfaction Club), with support from indie record store Permanent Records and pop-culture/music publication, L.A. Record. Marsha, Susanna, Moana and Suzy Creemchese will be the Go Go dancers and The Blindspot Project will bring a modern psychedelic light show.

Full list of artists performing, beginning in The Echo at 6 p.m.:

*Love Revisited with guitarist Johnny Echols and back-up band Baby Lemonade
*The Pandoras – featuring Kim Shattuck from The Muffs and The Pixies
