Dublab LA Phone Home: Heidi Lawden & Mez (DJ Sets)

Thursday, December 16, 2021
12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

On today’s episode of LA Phone Home, dublab resident Heidi Lawden brings her magic to Channel 66 inviting LA DJ Mez. The show will be hosted by LA’s hottest dancers Leon Yeshua and Nahla.

Heidi Lawden is a DJ, producer and occasional vocalist. She hosts the bi-weekly show ‘Magic Roundabout’ on LA’s Dublab.com. Heidi Lawden arrived in London’s club and rave scene in the early 90’s and has worked in the world of dance music ever since. Now based in California, she DJs at the West-coast’s finest clubs, undergrounds and festivals, regularly tapped to share bills with heavy-hitters such as Andrew Weatherall, Bicep, Roman Flügel, and Honey Dijon. Fluidly combining House, Techno and synth-laden Disco oddities to create a world of her own, Heidi has gained the respect and admiration of her peers through her knowledge, style, and infectious excitement for the global dance music community. Although having long since honed the subtle skill of the warm-up, Heidi excels with lengthy sets that truck through into the morning. A true crossover DJ traversing gay and straight parties, she invariably promotes fellow female and gender fluid artists through both her bookings and radio show. Recent features include guest mixtapes for the likes of Honey Soundsystem and Feel My Bicep, the latter citing her mix among the site’s most popular. During the day, Heidi collaborates with the ESP Institute label as well as curates worldwide events for DJ Harvey, yet she is notoriously media-shy and prefers to let her music and events do the talking. 2018 will see the debut her music production efforts, as well as the widening of her international touring schedule to include Panorama Bar, XOYO, Kaiku, Horsemeat Disco, Love International and Hï Ibiza.

If you’ve spent any time going to parties (or livestreams) in Los Angeles over the past few years, you’ve probably seen the name Mez on a couple flyers. The up-and-coming DJ has quickly become a regular at some of the city’s best-known parties, bringing a fresh but decidedly old-school vibe. He’s a young selector who plays ’90s house in a way that feels new and exciting and classic all at once—you can hear influences from the old guard in the smooth way he mixes and how long he lets the songs play out, but you can also imagine his excitement at hearing these old records for the first time and wanting to share them with everyone else. In the right hands, even the most obvious record can become new.
