To celebrate the release of Turbo Sonidero’s Lowrider Kumbias Rebajadas on cassette tape, Discos Rolas and Dublab present a night of cumbia sonidera. The evening will feature a screening and conversation between director Joyce García, photographer Mirjam Wirz, and archivist Jorge Balleza moderated by Alexandra Lippman. A cumbia sonidera dance party will follow with Turbo Sonidero, Sonido Sabotaje, Ganas and Xandão.
Yo No Soy Guapo (2018) directed by Joyce García is a heartfelt and authentic portrait of Tepito, one of Mexico City’s proudest barrios and the lengths to which they will go to defend their traditions. García focuses on cumbia sonidera (sound system cumbia), a record-based dance music scene performed in the street on sound systems. As the city begins to gentrify, prohibitions on street dances by local government threaten to shut down parties and public gatherings. Yo No Soy Guapo won first place in the Guanajuato’s International Film Festival.
