Verschwende deine Jugend (Play it Loud!)
Germany (BRD), 2003, 101 min., digital, Dir. Benjamin Quabeck
Cast: Tom Schilling, Robert Stadlober, Jessica Schwarz.
Music: Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Palais Schaumburg, plus others.
The setting is Munich. Everything is „cool“: the neon-colored dresses, the cool looks and most of all – the music. It’s the 1980s and the Neue Deutsche Welle of German New Wave music makes its way across Europe, and 19 year old Harry desperately wants to be part of it all. Although nobody would call his job as a bank clerk “cool”, his friends certainly are. Vince (Stadlober), Melitta (Schwarz) and Freddie (Kittel) are musicians in a local band “Apollo Schwabing.” Managing the band is Harry’s not only the ticket out of his boring career, but also stairway to his dreams. Harry’s plan for stardom involves nothing less than having „Apollo Schwabing“ play at the famous Circus Krone as the opening act for „DAF – Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft.” Unfortunately for Harry, becoming a successful “cool” music manager is not easy at all. The one major snag in Harry’s scheme is that DAF has no clue about his master plan. Soon Harry is confronted with one disaster after another – losing his girlfriend, losing his job, and losing his friendship with the “Apollo”Schwabing… In this coming-of-age-comedy, Harry learns that putting everything at risk is the only way to win.
