WORKSHOPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS
10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Shades of Red with Sandy Rodriguez

Exquisite Scarlet Creatures
Work in teams of two or three to create a fantastic creature using many shades of red at our drop-in workshop. Fun for all ages and artistic abilities!

Red Pigment Demonstration
11:15 a.m.; 12:15; 2:15 and 3:15 p.m.

During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the manufacture of pigments and colored inks used for painting and writing manuscripts was part of the science of alchemy, a precursor of modern chemistry concerned with the transformation of matter. The current exhibitions examine colorants made from plants, minerals, and metals, as well as medieval recipes for pigments and imitation. Join artist Sandy Rodriguez for a demonstration and explore three types of organic red materials from insects, flowers, and tree bark.

Golden Letters with Marianne Sadowski
Inspired by medieval manuscripts? Create your own golden initial! Draw or trace your favorite letter onto provided parchment paper, fill in with gold and then decorate with entwined animals, flowers, or whatever your heart desires.

Coloring Corner
Bring your Festival program to the Coloring Corner and find an array of shades of blue, red and gold just waiting to be used on the coloring pages in your program. Illustrations by Claire McCracken.

In-di-GO! with Niki Livingston
Get familiar with this very special type of blue in a hands-on natural dye workshop. Indigo isn’t just a shade of blue, it’s also a leafy plant that has been used to dye fabric for thousands of years. Artist Niki Livingston will guide you through the magical and alchemical process of dipping white fabric into a green dye bath. Then, watch the fabric turn indigo before your very eyes!

Color-Vision! with Nate Larson
