London duo Goldfrapp decided to make a short film rather than a music video to accompany their new track “Annabel” off their upcoming album Tales of Us. It was directed by Lisa Gunning, who is Alison Goldfrapp’s longtime partner.
The song is based on Kathleen Winter’s novel of the same name, and like the novel, the film explores themes of gender identity in childhood. The song doesn’t begin until almost half way through the piece, allowing for more developed characterization and a spacious narrative. You will notice that the electronic sounds that Goldfrapp built their reputation on are absent from this track, replaced by the warmth of simple acoustic instrumentation which is complemented by soft visuals of childhood in the English countryside.
Tales of Us is due out on Mute Records in September.
