There’s so much that’s so wonderful about this clip from the film “El Mundo de Los Pobres” starring Peruvian Chicha kings Los Shapis. First off, it gives a surely dramatized but totally electric, glimpse into a studio session with the band as they shimmy through a recording of their 1981 hit “El Aguajal.” El Chapulin’s voice soars in high notes over the shaking rhythms. Then you see the pressing plant making stacks of the 7″ record. I wish I could stick my hand in the screen to grab a few dozen freshly pressed discs. It then fades from the music fantasy into the stark reality of scenes from the poor streets of Lima. I can’t wait to see the full film.
