The mixtape grasps Singeli in its context – as street dance jams, as driving music, unofficial mp3s distributed outside big media or – as some Singeli critics think – as possession by malevolent spirits. All music was sourced on the spot from Tanzanian street vendors, teenage fans, producers, DJs and radio presenters. Mixtape is prepared by Owls Are Not – a collective of musicians, ethnomusicologists and designers, who explore overlapping territories of european and african aesthetics.
