The Year Was: 1991
09.23.24

With The Year Was, Annett is taking you on a journey through time. Each show, we’re traveling back to one year. What did it sound like – around the world, across different genres, scenes, and areas of pop culture?
This time we go back to 1991, a year of enormous upheaval – in the world and in music. The dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the decades-long Cold War ushered in a radical new era of optimism, technological progress and (relative) peace. There were revolutions in music too: Namely, the watershed moment when N.W.A.’s “Niggaz4life” became the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. And, of course, “Nevermind,“ the album that changed everything. Suddenly, alternative rock – and new anti-establishment ideas – were bubbling into the mainstream. At the same time, there was Eurodance, Pop-Rap, Diva House and early Trip Hop, the Hammer Dance was a thing, Hannibal Lector creeped the fuck out moviegoers, and the musical catchphrase of the year was: “You’re unbelievable. Oh! (What the?)”
1991 was a lot! This is what it sounded like.
