With The Year Was, Annett is taking you on a journey through time. Each show, we’re traveling back to one year. What did it sound like – around the world, across different genres, scenes, and areas of pop culture?
This time we are traveling back to 2003. A special moment, just before the 21st century fully rolled in with its cultural tectonic shifts: a time before smartphones, streaming, and social media (Myspace had just been founded). You could still smell the cultural trails of the 90s. Nokia brick phones, ICQ messenger and network TV ruled the world. So did OutKast, Panjabi MC, the Post-Punk revival, and Beyoncé’s first solo record. It was the age of low-rise jeans and iPods. Minimal techno was big in Europe, DFA gathered the anxious post-9/11 New York youth on the electro-punk dance floors, and everyone (ironically) watched “The O.C.” And there was the Britney/Madonna moment at the VMAs…
