Storage Container: On Learning from Water Loved Ones

02.24.24

A mix series utilizing sonic exploration to acknowledge bodily systems as containers storing the ability to transform/transport + absorb/release nutritive input and stimuli.

This episode acts as a slow but potent contemplation / meditation on what we can learn from our water dwelling neighbors in order to swim and continue to tirelessly stretch towards collective liberation, mutual aid/care, compassion, and commitment. How do we stay grounded amidst crisis so that we can take action as the whales are doing amidst warming waters and decreasing levels of Chinook Salmon?

How do we as humans – part of this greater ecosystem recognize the harm being done onto the nature (and those dwell within it) with which we rely on with such unbreakable interdependence?

A sonic landscape made up of compositions which aim to create space in order to process and to feel the wholeness and undefinable complexity of emotions and physical sensation that one might be moving through in this time in order to be in right relationship with this moment. The ocean, the mountains, and the ponds, the trees, the soil all hold and transform the pain of this moment – the pain of loss, of lack of safety, of lack of nourishment, and lack of cool water to quench thirst. They speak to us, asking for us to listen so that we can hear their call to alchemize this pain into action pushing towards liberation and resources for all.

The episode of this show woven together via field recordings of whales, streams, tadpoles, dolphins, hydrophone recordings of the deep ocean, and bubbling brooks. May these sounds remind us of cool water on our skin and on the skin of all who inhabit this earth and beyond. What is to be learned by the beings, moss, lichen, and creatures that surround us/are within us/ + are asking for us to watch and to listen and to feel so that we can shift paradigms and dismantle systems of harm.

over and over again
it becomes known
the peace we seek
is seeking us
the joy a full bud
awaiting our attention
justice in our hands
longing to be practiced
the whole world
learning
from within
this thrilling mote in the universe
laboratory
labyrinth
internalize demands
you are the one
you are waiting for
externalize love
bind us together into
a greater self
a complex movement
a generative abundance
an embodied evolution
learn to be here
critique is a seductress
her door is always open
so what if you get some
we are going further
past reform, to wonder
this requires comprehension
that cannot fit in words
out beyond our children
beyond the end of time
there is a ceaseless cycle
a fractal of sublime
and we come to create it
to soil our hands and faces
loving loving and loving
ourselves, and all our places

“May you study the pink of yourself. Know yourself riverine and coast. May you taste the fresh
and the saltwater of yourself and know what only you can know. May you live in the mouth of the
river, meeting place of the tides, may all blessings flow through you.”
― Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals

“What are your dorsal practices? What evolutionary repetitions have you cultivated to move
through oceans? What are the ones you need to cultivate for the waves moving you now?”
