Beneath Detroit Archives
02.27.22

Beneath Detroit Archives is a collection of the Creative Music Program’s unheard live jazz recordings that took place between 1979 and 1992 at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). The Creative Music concerts highlight an important avant-garde jazz movement that prominently featured Detroit musicians’ musical ingenuity and experimentation. Both onstage and in continuing musical collaborations, these concerts triangulated and expanded musical connections with the older avant-minded collectives that had been its models like the AACM in Chicago and BAG in St. Louis.
This episode’s concert aired on October 2nd, 1982 at DIA and features some of the rotating cast of the Creative Music Program concert series: Douglas Ewart on reeds, Spencer Barefield on guitar, and Tani Tibbal and Hamid Hank Drake on percussion.
