Live dublab Mix

Berlin’s Gudrun Gut stands at the center of Germany’s contemporary music scene, yet she’s always worked at its fringes. Gut played in the original lineup of crucial industrial/post-punk band Einsturzende Neubauten among others, has run the excellent Monika Enterprise label (responsible for the four-part 4 Woman No Cry series) and earned a reputation as a groundbreaking DJ with her Oceanclub radio show, co-hosted by fellow dublab affiliate and Orb member Thomas Fehlmann.
On this mix from 2003, Gut’s selections take a turn for the quirky as she pairs subtle and sublime Monika Enterprise releases with krautrock cuts from the likes of Neu! and Kraftwerk, the Red Hot Chili Peppers of all people, and a half-dozen unexpected cover versions (listed below) before tying things up with one of her own terrific tracks, “Sweet.”
The covers include: Chica and the Folder – I’ll Come Running (orig. Brian Eno), Martin L. Gore of Depeche Mode – Loverman (orig. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), M. Ward – Let’s Dance (orig. David Bowie), Flaming Lips – Can’t Get You Out of My Head (orig. Kylie Minogue) and Ricardo Villalobos – Frank & Hennes (guitars and rhythm taken from Pink Floyd’s “Fearless”).
FROM THE VAULTS is an ongoing curation project produced by Ben Sinclair, resurfacing rare live performances and DJ sets recorded during dublab’s first ten years.
