Version Sounds
06.24.25

Version Sounds is an interpretation of radio communication. At its roots, the show credits reggae dub for adding so much to the music we listen to today. From there the branches continue to sprout via a myriad of genres and time spans. Colombian cumbias meet Germanic techno dub meets British twee pop. Stereolab and Sun Ra lounge around as Stars of the Lid jam with Prince Jammy. You never know what to expect but you are guaranteed that the now sounds of 2021 will have a toast with the happening sonics of 1968 and beyond!
After guesting on gfunktrece’s show back in April, Hoseh returns the favor by hosting his fellow dublab DJ on this week’s Version Sounds. Enjoy this crossover episode!
Gabriel aka gfunktrece grew up in the San Fernando Valley with family roots from El Salvador. Counterculture, community organizing and his family refugee experience has shaped his relationship to music. As a DJ and record collector, Gabriel finds importance in preserving music from marginalized communities and music’s role in empowering people. He is the host of Escuchar al Istmo, a monthly dublab show focused on the music and stories of the Central American LA community and is a co-founding member of a Salvadoran music memory project called Radio Pulgarcito.
