Every episode highlights a new niche collective, label, party, or individual who has changed Miami’s scene for the better. Based is able to compare and contrast Miami’s music community to others and gives artists a platform to contextualize new records & opportunities. Diego Melgar is a guitarist based out of Miami that incubates the growing jazz scene within the city. With 5 different musical projects to pick from, Diego is able to give a taste of everything he’s involved in spanning from playing jazz nights at the best bars, running an experimental improvisation group for the community, and releasing cassette tapes for his different projects via Technique Records. He emphasizes the constant importance of collaboration within the community, touches on the wonders and confusions of the internet, and speaks of his time abroad and the quartet he started in Estonia while we play a bit from each project. Whether it’s his band, trio, or feature, Diego has made his passion and talent clear to Miami and internationally.

After studying jazz guitar at the prestigious Frost School of Music, Diego has performed in a wide range of opportunities around town and abroad. Whether playing with the New World Symphony, performing with his jazz trio, or playing festivals with his group Butterfly Snapple, a common thread of passion can be seen on display.
