Sampled to the Soul

10.10.13

Sampled to the Soul – If imitation is the highest form of flattery, sampling isn’t close behind. The practice of taking a small part of one song and reinterpreting it into another has been around for as long as music itself. It was not until the proliferation of turntablism in hip-hop music that the practice became the subject of much controversy. Demand for legal regulation resulted in the restriction of the practice to varying degrees over the past couple of decades. Despite mounting financial barriers to sampling legally, artists continue to sample. The following is a collection of originals, sampled by more contemporary artists in a variety of genres. The intention of this collection is to educate and surprise fans of both the new works of music and the works from which they were inspired. – Jonathan Kornman
