Sensitive: New Jack Swing, RnB and Neo Soul from France

Taking its name from the 1994 compilation album of the same name, Sensitive is a wide-ranging survey of New Jack Swing, RnB and Neo Soul recorded in France during the final decade of the 20th century.
Martyn Pepperell’s introduction to French Hip-Hop, RnB and Soul came via remixes of MC Solaar and Les Nubians in the late 1990s. Two decades later, while undertaking a research project into international New Jack Swing scenes during the first two years of the global pandemic, Martyn realized that most of the best songs he’d come across were from the French scene. Recently, he was able to sit down and record a two-hour mix of some of his favorite tracks from James Tenor, Les Nubians, Tribal Jam, Alias LJ, Matt Houston, Delaxoix, K-Reen and many other celebrated (and not so celebrated) French solo artists and groups.
Martyn Pepperell is an award-winning freelance music journalist, broadcaster and DJ from Aotearoa/New Zealand. Last year, he co-produced a special broadcast for dublab with Ken Hidaka about the life and times of the legendary Japanese composer, producer and DJ Susumu Yokota.
