Underscore: The Time That Remains
10.05.25

Underscore is a monthly exploration of movie soundtracks guided by Mary. Each episode highlights music and sounds from specific films, genres, or the broader filmography of a director.
Just as underscoring in film enhances emotions and narratives, Underscore delves into the profound impact that music has on shaping us personally and on the emotional landscape of cinema.

I’m dedicating this month’s episode to The Time That Remains, a personal and reflective film by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman.
The Time That Remains is the final installment in Suleiman’s autobiographical trilogy. It was inspired by his father’s diaries, letters his mother wrote to relatives who fled the Israeli occupation, and his own recollections of his family’s experiences.
This is a movie that spans decades of familial and political history, and I hope all viewers can approach it with an open heart and the utmost humanity. Free Palestine.
