Underscore: Love & Pop
05.04.25

Underscore is a monthly exploration of movie soundtracks guided by Mary. Each episode highlights music and sounds from specific films, genres, or the broader filmography of a director.
Just as underscoring in film enhances emotions and narratives, Underscore delves into the profound impact that music has on shaping us personally and on the emotional landscape of cinema.
This month’s episode features mostly classical arrangements from ‘Love & Pop’ (1998), an experimental film directed by Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.
Love & Pop is one of those films that leaves my heart aching and tender. I first discovered it years ago through a grainy YouTube upload, and even then, it left a deep impression. Earlier this year, it had a 2K restoration and screened in North America for the first time ever and I was able to see it with somebody I love—making my second viewing of it extra special.
