On this month’s episode, Xandão was joined by guest Marvin Astorga (Xina Xurner & Tzotzona).

Marvin Astorga (he/him) is a Los Angeles-based electronic musician exploring queer, brown futures through sound. He is 1/2 of the experimental music/performance duo Xina Xurner along with artist Young Joon Kwak. Xina Xurner’s cathartic performances and sadical, sexperimental noise-diva-dance anthems evoke a sense of death, decay, and transformation and expand ideas about queer and trans bodies. Xina Xurner released their debut album “DIE” in 2012, and their follow-up “Queens of the Night” in April of 2018.

Astorga’s solo project, Tzotzona, is a brown-futurist electronic music undertaking synthesizing elements of Cumbia, Technobanda, house, techno, acid, Quebradita, and 3bal. Taking inspiration from Astorga’s upbringing in the Ciudad Juarez-El Paso Borderplex, as well as sampling, a precolumbian imaginary, and 90s-era Mexican telenovelas and TV ad spots, the music looks to the recent and ancestral past for a vision of a queer, brown future where borders, gender, time, and space are fluid. Tzotzona’s debut EP will be released summer 2021.
