The Year Was takes you on a journey through time. In each show, Annett travels back in time to explore a different year. What did music sound like around the world, across different genres and scenes of pop culture? What else was happening at that time? And how does that resonate today?
Annett Scheffel is a journalist, culture writer, moderator and radio host based in Los Angeles and Berlin. She thinks, writes, and talks about music, film, feminism, and contemporary culture – preferably at the complex interfaces between identity, society, and politics.
1996 was the year that finally made Annett to break her own rule.
Not only is it bursting with infectious swagger, but also with such an endless array of great songs that it can’t be condensed into just one episode. So, we’re going all in with Part 2, which is every bit as fun as the first one. And it comes with more really good 90s Hip Hop (on very different speed and intensity levels: Foxy Brown, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, German battle rap, and Puerto Rican Reggaeton speed rap), but also Toni Braxton, a bit of Oasis, The Cardigans, Stereolab, music from India, France, and Japan, and lots of trip hop moods and foggy electronic textures.
