Discoteca Imaginaria: Cash Money and the Birth of Bounce
06.02.26

Discoteca Imaginaria is an audio docu-series covering the people, places and sounds that have shaped popular music. Each episode transports listeners through history to the greatest club on earth – the disco of our imagination.
In the early 1990s, New Orleans carried the grim distinction of America’s murder capital. Yet from the city’s housing projects emerged one of rap music’s most singular movements.
Cash Money Records fused bounce rhythms, second-line traditions and the swagger of Mardi Gras into a new sound driven by the futuristic production of Mannie Fresh and the unmistakable Southern drawl of Juvenile, Birdman, B.G. and Lil Wayne. A groundbreaking distribution deal with Universal Music transformed the label from a regional phenomenon into a national force, cementing Cash Money as one of the defining musical exports from “The City That Care Forgot.”
