Discoteca Imaginaria is an audio docu-series covering the people, places and sounds that have shaped popular music. Each episode transports listeners through history to the greatest club on earth – the disco of our imagination.
From Harvard classics scholar to blues harp prodigy, Peter Ivers’ path defied expectations. After studying harmonica in Chicago under Muddy Waters and Little Walter, Ivers moved to Los Angeles in 1971 to become a sought-after film composer. His eccentric style and androgynous voice, while singular and unique, proved to be a hurdle in garnering mainstream success as a solo artist. In the 1980s, he finally did break out of the underground as host of New Wave Theatre, a late night public-access show that introduced L.A.’s punk scene to a national audience. Though his life was tragically cut short in an unsolved 1983 murder, Peter Ivers’ music and influence remain as unpredictable and influential as ever.
