While the global pandemic may have put a damper on our adventures in clubbing, music still has the power to transport us to places unknown. For now, the greatest club on earth may exist in our imagination – Discoteca Imaginaria. Each episode takes listeners to the scenes, clubs, regions and technology that have shaped our sonic history.

New compositions have incorporated existing sound recordings since the 1940s, when French musique concrète artists began experimenting with tape looping. However, it was the MPC sampler that took this art form to new cultural heights. Hip-hop and electronic musicians in the 1980s and 1990s showcased the seemingly endless possibilities of this new technology in albums like DJ Shadow’s Entroducing and The Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique. This all came to an abrupt halt following a string of high-profile copyright lawsuits. Despite the financial barriers that came from these decisions, sampling continues to be a cornerstone of our musical zeitgeist.
